The Learning curve!
By Tony Nootebos of Harrison Bay Guided Services

Well it is already February and the years are just flying by! It seems like the years are getting shorter as there is more to do and it seems like less time to get it done! Guided fishing is similar in a way, often guides feel like there is a short time to produce even though the fishing trip may last up to 8 hours or more. As sport fishers most people realize that although catching fish is the primary purpose of the trip, it is truly the whole experience that should be savored when going on a guided adventure. There are some days when the fish just cooperate and fish come easy all day long, while other days the bite is very short and even when on the fish they seem to have lock jaw. It is during these challenging days that paying attention to detail and being sure your equipment is at its best can make the difference of having a good day fishing or a great day catching fish!

Although fishing rods and reels play a large role in fishing success terminal tackle has to be considered as the most important element when it comes to making those few opportunities count. Sharp hooks and leader material you can trust have to be applied cast after cast day after day if you want to make the most of your fishing opportunities. Check your hook point and run your hand down the leader to check for nicks and frays in the line on a regular basis. More fish are lost due to dull hooks and weak leaders than for any other reason in sport fishing.

Having owned a tackle shop, and worked in others it has always amazed me how people are willing to spend hundreds, sometimes even thousands of dollars on fishing rods, reels, and other expensive items, yet when it comes to terminal tackle often hook price and cheap line dictate over quality! There are many good hook and line manufactures around, but for my money it is hard to beat Gamakatzu and Owner as top choices in hooks, and while Maxima monofilament is my choice in smaller rivers and streams, Power Pro is my choice on larger rivers. These hooks and lines are top quality and priced higher than most others, but really when you think about it they can and often do make the difference in final success. Regardless of what type of line, leader, or hook type you choose be sure to check for dull points and frayed leaders frequently throughout the day.

Over the next few months I plan on covering many of the basics in sport fishing and gear selection for fresh water fishing applications. The importance of properly organizing your fishing tackle and having the best tools for the job are invaluable when it comes to your enjoyment and success in fresh water fishing applications. Every area has a different technique or method to be applied, but some things are consistent and common sense, hopefully changing a few of the bad habits or gaining new ideas will help to make your fishing time more successful!
